I first heard the words, "The Carlyle" watching the movie, Sabrina, with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond. I knew, word unheard, sight unseen, the name stood for class, money, and tradition. It sounded sturdy, one-of-a-kind, and deserving of respect and admiration. Actually viewing it's front doors in the evening, with cool lights below reflecting on upper room windows, and hearing the sounds of New York City and the quiet of Central Park all around you, you understand perfectly why it is touted as, "A Manhattan Legend."
A Rosewood Hotel, debuting in 1930, the Madison Avenue upper east side boutique hotel is an award winner, with Conde Nast Traveler's Gold List award, 2009, and Travel and Leisure World's Best Hote,l 2010. The prestige of these awards are not given out; they are earned.
The high priority for privacy and security are one of the reasons many people from affluent sectors of society, namely celebreties, artists, writers and politicians frequent the offerings of The Carlyle repeatedly. But for those of us who want to play tourist and just see everything, the flavor of upper-crust New York City is at hand.
You enter the lobby, and dark walnut polished walls and floors greet you, lit with ornate chandeliers that grace the ceilings overhead. Elegant furniture dots the spacious areas, where Concierge, Hotel Secretary, and Valet await your command to be put into service.
Your room offers twice daily maid service, 24-hour in-room service, pet accommodation, and as always, privacy is number one. You may wish to remain in your room with your companion, opening the drapes, gazing at Central Park in the twilight, and remain privately esconced in your little world. That would not allow you to sample Executive Chef James Skatos's cuisine talents.
The Carlyle Restaurant is their center stone of the setting; Lobster, Tournados of Beef, Filet Mignon, Lamb and Veal entrees are major gems; Raw Fish, a sushi bar awaits your order.
